Antonino Torrisi

Sculptor

(September 16, 1922 - December 18, 2002)

Antonino Torrisi dedicated his life to lava stone, a non-uniform, porous material cooked by heat and time, shaping it with his art. He drew inspiration from the lines and shapes of the old master stonemasons. He was just twelve years old when a visit to a lava stone quarry ignited his passion for sculpting.

The stone was not simply a means to model his ideas but he often preserved the original forms, enhancing its essence. He would simply look at the stone and let its impulses, rhythms and graceful cadences inspire the artwork.
